"Recommended" homework generally will not be collected. These assignments should be completed - or, at least, attempted - by the date specified in class. Typically this will be 1-2 classes after the material is first introduced; however, pay attention in class for details. I may check at the beginning of class to verify that you worked on the assigned problems.

When a range of problems (e.g. "PE 1-10") is assigned, it is not necessary to do every single problem - though you certainly may! - but rather to spend a significant amount of time and thought on them, and to identify problems - if any - that you need help with, have questions about, or find particularly interesting. If the exercises seem to be divided into groups of similar-looking exercises, you should try at least one or two exercises of each type. Ideally, we will discuss some of these problems in class before moving on to new material.

NOTE: there are several different types of exercises on the textbook. Be careful to observe the difference - especially on collected homework assignments! (For example: if I assign Problem #4, and you instead turn in Practice Exercise #4, then you've done the wrong assignment and therefore will not receive any credit.)

  • "Writing, Discussion, Comprehension and Exploration" (WDCE) - I usually assign these very often. However, it's still a good idea to take a look at these after reading a section of the text to help you reflect on the content of that section.
  • "Practice Exercises" (PE) - I usually assign most - if not all - of these exercises from each section as recommended homework exercises. Again, this does not mean you're necessarily expected to do them all. Rather, you should do as many as time allows, during the time that you've allotted to yourself outside of class to devote to this course. (Remember that you're expected to spend 2-3 hours outside of class for each hour in class!)
  • "Problems" - These are usually more involved and/or less routine than the practice exercises. I occasionally assign these as part of collected homework assignments.
