Au cours d’une contre attaque à la baïonnette, l’Aspirant De Royère et 9 tirailleurs trouvèrent la mort sous les balles des mitrailleuses. Le cénotaphe (tombe sans corps) de l’Aspirant de Royère existe encore dans cette forêt et une plaque rappelant son glorieux sacrifice est apposée sur le monument aux morts.</span></p> <p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span style="font-size:12pt;font-family:&amp;amp;">Mais il était dit que ces bois serviraient encore de tombeau : le 10 août 1944, un avion américain était abattu par la FLAK allemande en batterie dans la plaine de Mardeuil. Pour rencontrer la craie, il faut creuser assez profondément ; il existait <span> </span>des caves dans l’enceinte de l’ancienne abbaye mais elles sont très humides.<span> </span> En 1673, près du moulin à vent, Dom Pérignon fait creuser une cave dans les vignes, en bordure du chemin descendant vers Cumières. Cette cave est fermée par une porte en bois et 2 en fer. D’autres sources indiquent qu’elle aurait été creusée en 1506 sous le gouvernement de l’abbé Thomas Rogier dont elle aurait pris le prénom.</span></p> <p style="text-align:left;" align="left"><span style="font-family:&amp;amp;">Il est toutefois certain que Dom Pérignon a utilisé ces caves.
