- PhotoLinux A place for Photographers using GNU/Linux

- where Linux stands as far as photography is concerned.

- Nodal compositing in Blender supports some amazingly high quality effects and nigh on infinite bit depths, so you can keep your work in pristine form. You can save as OpenEXR for the full bit depth. 16 bit full TIFFs are being worked on as we speak, but the OpenEXR format has some serious versatility regarding bit depths etc.
- digiKam 0.9.x has 80% of what you need, 0.10 version which is coming out for Christmas should have 99% (no contact-sheet).
- I think Krita 2.0 (which will, deo volente, be released this year) will satisfy many of your requirements for photo work. We’ve got the precision, the bit depth, the filters and the tools — and the nested layers, non-destructive filter masks and all that. As well as painting stuff and oodles of flexibility, of course.
- DigiKam (comes with ShowFoto):
CHECK * display quickly any file type (including RAW)
CHECK * thumbnails / image / metadata / folder browsing panes that can be moved around and hidden
CHECK * full exif and XMP tags management / search support
CHECK * slideshow / fullscreen
SORRY * create contact sheets (I know, this looks like a gadget, but it comes in very handy)
CHECK * right-click on an image to open it in the raw converter / image editor
Er, digikam does do color management: go to settings/color management and check the checkbox that says “Enable color managemen
- I just want to add my agreement to the scripting approach. The tools are all there (dcraw, exiftool, ImageMagick, netpbm, perl, python, etc), and they are first rate. It’s just not the usual GUI approach that many are looking for, but it *is* the unix way.
- Gwenview:

CHECK * slideshow / fullscreen
SORRY * create contact sheets (I know, this looks like a gadget, but it comes in very handy)

- . Although it is now possible to obtain a very consistent color management workflow under Linux, certain problems still remain:
- status
- color management under Linux, while functional, has not yet acquired mature status.
- * Some necessary software such as LUT loaders can seldom be found in the package repositories of even the major Linux distributions.
- * The absence of a central user control panel for color settings.
- * Many hardware devices for color calibration lack drivers and proper supporting software on Linux.
- one can simply produce a profile on a different OS and then use it in a Linux workflow. Additionally, certain hardware, such as most printers and certain monitors, can be calibrated under another OS and then used in a fully color-managed workflow on Linux.

- GIMP includes a very unique support for various input devices out of the box. Pressure and tilt sensitive tablets, but also a wide range of USB or MIDI controllers. You can bind often-used actions to device events such as rotating a USB wheel or moving a MIDI controller's slider. Change the size, angle or opacity of a brush while you paint, bind your favorite scripts to buttons. Speed up your workflow!
- To save disk space, any format can be saved with an archive extension such as ZIP, GZ or BZ2 and GIMP will transparently compress the file without you needing to do any extra steps.
- Thanks to the transparent virtual file system, it is possible to load and save files to from remote locations using protocols such as FTP, HTTP or even SMB (MS Windows shares) and SFTP/SSH.

- gimp-DBP (David's Batch Processor)

- a simple batch processing plugin for the Gimp - it allows the user to automatically perform operations (such as resize) on a collection of image files.
- Its main advantage is that the user does not have to learn a scripting language. Like the Gimp itself, DBP relies on a graphical interface. The user creates a list of images, and sets up the processing required for each image. The results of the current settings can be displayed. Once the required sequence of operations has been set up, DBP performs the same processing on each image in turn.
- The images can be colour corrected, resized, cropped, and sharpened, then renamed and saved to a different file in a specified image format. All the steps (except loading and saving the image!) are optional; so the simplest use of DBP is just to convert a number of image files from one format to another.
- The processing steps are laid out on a series of pages, one for each step.
- Hint: start at the Input page and set up each one in order.
- Hint: use the Test button to see the effect of the processing

- print plugin for the GIMP
This package includes the Gutenprint Print plugin for the GIMP.
This is Gutenprint version 5.0.2, a stable release
in the 5.0 series.
Gutenprint is the print facility for the GIMP, and in addition a
suite of drivers that may be used with common UNIX spooling systems
using GhostScript or CUPS. These drivers provide printing quality
for UNIX/Linux on a par with proprietary vendor-supplied drivers in
many cases, and can be used for many of the most demanding printing
tasks. Gutenprint was formerly known as Gimp-Print. - gutenprint-developer-manual.pdf

- gimp-Print helper

- A Script to guide you to colour-managed printing,
- Typically colour rendering differs between devices (monitors, printers). Aside of calibrating the devices to a defined state colour-profiles are used to describe the behaviour of the output-devices. Gimp realises colour-management by using a working-colour-space, a monitor-colour-space to get a good vision on a monitor and a printer-colour-space to be able to render print-previews.
- With the availability of good photo-printers there is a need to include them into the colour-management chain by:
- 1 keeping the printer in a controlled state (for example HP 9180 and HP 8850 can calibrate themselves, calibrate always with the same paper).
- 2 get a colour-profile (or make it) for each paper-type. Leave the colour-relevant settings of your printer-driver untouched after calibration and profiling.
- 3 convert the image from the working-colour-space to the printer-colour-space and
- 4 do eventually some enhancements (rotation, scaling, sharpening) and at last
- 5 print it.
- This script assist for the steps 3 to 5. Colour-Management is only supported for RGB-Images.
- GETTING PRINTER-COLOUR-PROFILES
- a)Use vendor supplied profiles from printer or paper manufactors. These are mostly produced not with linux systems, therefore it is questionable it they are reliable for linux systems
- b)Some vendors offer to make profiles for you
- c)You can use vuescan (www.hamrick.com)to profile a printer by using a scanner. Vuescan can even profile your scanner by using an IT8-target (for example from www.targets.coloraid.de/)

- gimp-plugin-userfilter

- Generic scriptable filter plug-in for The Gimp.
- GIMP User Filter allows the use of Photoshop (*.8bf) filters

- if your only interest is in importing filters, you can ignore the controls for writing filters. To import a Photoshop filter, all you need to do is click the Open button on the Filter Editor tab and navigate to your download directory. By default, the file manager displays only .GUF (native GIMP files), so you need to change it to .8bf (Photoshop filters) or, better yet, since some of the downloaded filters may not have case-sensitive names and display their extensions as all-caps, to All files. When you have selected a filter, you can see a preview in the top left of the screen. To apply it to the currently active file in the GIMP, click the OK button.
- Should you find the filter worth keeping, go to the Filter Directories tab to designate a storage directory for imports. If you save the filter with a .GUF extension, you can save time the next time you use the filter by going directly to the Filter Manager tab, which lists only imported filters.

- Normal mapping is used to re-detail simplified meshes
- In 3D computer graphics, normal mapping is an application of the technique known as bump mapping.
- While bump mapping perturbs the existing normal (the way the surface is facing) of a model, normal mapping replaces the normal entirely. Like bump mapping, it is used to add details to shading without using more polygons. But where a bump map is usually calculated based on a single-channel (interpreted as grayscale) image, the source for the normals in normal mapping is usually a multichannel image (x, y and z channels) derived from a set of more detailed versions of the objects.

- GIMP DDS plugin

- This is a plugin for GIMP version 2.4.x. It allows
you to load and save images in DirectDraw Surface (DDS) format.
- The DirectDraw Surface (.dds) file format, from Microsoft, is used for storing textures and cubic environment maps, both compressed and uncompressed.
- specifically designed for use in real-time rendering applications, such as 3D games.
- Due to the fact that most video cards natively support DXTn texture compression, use of this format can save memory on the video card.

- swf export

- For image conversion and an easy way keeping the content of our lastest Flash project up to date i wrote today an Flash SWF Export Script for Gimp.
- The basic features are still working at the moment (no animations support yet). This script requires the package SWFTools.
- How it work:
- * Open your image in Gimp
- * Goto "File > Flash SWF Export"
- * Setup options, output directory and filename
- * The GIMP background color is exported as the background color of the XHTML
- CMYK Tiff 2 PDF

- To complete my workflow using Seperate+ that generates CMYK Tiff images inside of Gimp i wrote a small Python plugin for Gimp that allows you to convert the saved CMYK Tiff image into a PDF for prepress.
- The way it work is very easy, just follow these steps:
- * Make sure you have installed the package "libtiff-tools" (or tiffcp and tif2pdf)
- * Create your CMYK Tiff images with Seperate+ from RGB images (Ubuntu Ibex shiped with it, install package "gimp-plugin-registry")
- * Start CMYK Tiff 2 PDF "<Image Window> > Image > Seperate > CMYK Tiff 2 PDF"
- * Browse to your saved CMYK Tiff images (up to two)
- * Setup the options you prefer
- * In the same directory of your CMYK Tiff image a PDF using the given names is generated
- This plugin allows you generate prepress PDF
documents of your Inkscape illustrations too:
- * Create your illustration in Inkscape
- * Export it as PNG using 300dpi resolution and the required output size
- * Open this PNG image into Gimp
- * Use Seperate+ as desctibed here

- * Use CMYK Tiff 2 PDF to convert it to a PDF document
- The only limitation for prepress is that you have to add markers, overlapping, color scala etc. yourself. Any feedback is welcome.

- Inkscape

- Create and edit Scalable Vector Graphics images
Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript,JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.
Inkscape's main motivation is to provide the Open Source community with a fully W3C compliant XML, SVG, and CSS2 drawing tool. Additional planned work includes conversion of the codebase from C/Gtk to C++/Gtkmm, emphasizing a lightweight core with powerful features added through an extension mechanism, and the establishment of a friendly, open, community-oriented development processes. - Documentation

- special tools for drop shadows, bevels, and navigation buttons.
- runs around eight times faster than Adobe Illustrator
- easy to learn
- The progress of the Linux version has stalled and the program's website has not been updated since August 2006. However, forums continue to be updated, and new builds continue to be released.
- One of the critical components is still proprietary - the part that makes it really fast and it is progressing at a snails pace. graphic designers, layout professionals along with others have felt
necessary, but modernized with some new touches.
Fontmatrix has a concept of 'tagging'. This makes it really nice to group

It also has extensive gui support for showing all glyphs in a font,
previews of sample text, variable sizing and also tells what kinds of
advanced Open Type features are inside each font. These features have
never been seen outside of a font editor. And not least, it creates a
nice PDF catalogue of user's fonts for printing or reference. In short,
fontmatrix is a font manager for professionals, but is nice and user

- nip2

- Spreadsheet-like graphical image manipulation tool.
- nip2 aims to be about halfway between Excel and Photoshop. You don't directly edit images --- instead, like a spreadsheet, you build relationships between objects. You enter formula (or select menu items) to describe how to make a new object from some of the objects you already have. nip2 keeps track of these relationships: if you make a change anywhere, nip2 automatically recalculates anything affected by the change.
- You can load a 500MB image, rotate it by 12 degrees, and immediately view the transformed image. This is because only the pixels needed to paint the display are actually calculated. You can add a slider, link it to the rotation, and as you drag the slider you can see your 500MB image spinning on the screen.
- You can apply a filter to the rotated image, zoom in to check the effect on individual pixels, crop out a small section of the filtered image and save the cropped area to disc. All this happens pretty much instantly, with only a few mouse-clicks. The final save may take a little while (since nip2 does actually have to calculate some pixels then), but it will only calculate the pixels it absolutely has to (it will not rotate the entire 500MB image, for example).

- hugin

- Hugin is a panorama stitching and more. A powerful software package for creation and processing of panoramic images.

- Hugin › Wiki › ubuntuusers.de

- the good thing about this utility is the ability to tweak settings to the nth degree, which means you’ve got a better chance of getting a good result if some of your shots are a little dodgy.
- When taking your series of photographs, try to get about 20% to 30% overlap between shots, so you’ll have enough detail to stitch images together. Some lenses have blurry performance near the edges, so you might want even more overlap to ensure the mosaic will feature your best detail from the centers of each image. If there’s a principal feature in the scene, try to capture that feature completely in just one of the images.

- Alchemy

- Alchemy is an open drawing project aimed at exploring how we can sketch, draw, and create on computers in new ways. Alchemy isn’t software for creating finished artwork, but rather a sketching environment that focuses on the absolute initial stage of the creation process. Experimental in nature, Alchemy lets you brainstorm visually to explore an expanded range of ideas and possibilities in a serendipitous way.
- Features
- Interaction
- The Alchemy drawing canvas has an intentionally reduced level of functionality. No undo, no selecting, and no editing. Interaction focuses instead on the output of a great number of good, bad, strange and beautiful shapes.
- Modules
- Alchemy consists of a growing number of ‘modules’ that can be added or removed at will. Using a given module you can do things like:
- * Shout at the computer. Use your voice to control the width of a line or the form of a shape.
- * Draw ‘blind’. Turn off the canvas display and explore what shapes emerge from the ‘darkness’.
- * Create random shapes. Generate shapes that can be used as a starting point for characters, spaceships, or whatever shape you see in the ‘clouds’.
- * Mirror draw. Draw mirrored symmetrical forms in realtime.
- * Capture real colour. Use your web camera as a live colour palette.
- * Randomise. Mess up and distort shapes.
- Global Features
- Other global features place focus on the ‘process’ of drawing, letting you do things like:
- * Record a drawing ’session’. Automatically save the contents of the canvas to a page in a PDF file at set intervals.
- * Auto-clear the canvas. Start drawing on a clean slate at set intervals. Force yourself to start over fresh.
- * Switch the canvas. Automatically open your sketch in a more ‘conventional’ drawing application, either as a bitmap or vector file.
- * Avoid distraction. Alchemy has a very minimal interface, just a simple toolbar that dissapears magically, and a fullscreen mode to block everything else out.
- To take a good look at what Alchemy can (and can not) do, check out the Videos section.

- drawpile

- a collaborative drawing program. DrawPile is a drawing program that allows multiple people to draw on the same picture at the same time. DrawPile offers simple drawing tools geared towards sketching and has support for tablet pressure sensitivity.
the application features 2 distinct modules: a Host and a client module. The graphic interface is intuitive and the layout doesn't hinder the user.
When not connected or hosting a server DrawPile acts as any other image editor.
DrawPile can read and save multiple file formats including bmp, pbm, png, ppm and xbm.
It also features an annotation tool. The annotation tool is pretty much like the text tool in other drawing programs, except the text always floats above the actual image. Because DrawPile doesn't have its own image format (yet), the annotations cannot be saved. They can, however, be burned onto the image (in offline mode only, more on that below.)
The server is QT based (no more other external dependencies) and built as a shared library that can be embedded inside the client and in a tiny standalone shell. One nice feature is the ability to buffer raster data and drawing commands. The server can then efficiently handle new clients with minimal disturbance to other users, and is more robust to boot. As the manual is in the fucking dockbook format which newalz nothin in ubuntu can read, I converted it to html, you can find it in ~/Documents/2d/drawpile - Feature highlights
- * Antialiased drawing and multiple blending modes
- * Layers
- * Text annotations
- * Tablet pressure sensitivity
- * Image may be rotated freely while drawing
- * Built-in server for hosting shared sessions
- * Chat

- passepartout

- an Open Source Desktop Publishing application. The goal is to provide a simple and user-friendly, yet powerful tool for creating printed material. Passepartout combines a WYSIWYG layout editor with a high-quality typesetting engine.
You do not use Passepartout for writing text, because it is only a layout editor. Basically speaking, Passepartout is in the business of taking the different parts that make up a page, such as text, photos, graphics, and "gluing" them on piece of paper. Passepartout can import from several different bitmapped image formats as well as EPS files. You write the text in your favorite text editor (e.g. Emacs or VI) in an XML-based format. The XML file is then typeset using a typesetting engine called xml2ps.
- Phatch

- Phatch is a simple to use cross-platform GUI Photo Batch Processor which handles all popular image formats and can duplicate (sub)folder hierarchies. Phatch can batch resize, rotate, apply perspective, shadows, rounded corners, ... and more in minutes instead of hours or days if you do it manually. Phatch allows you to use EXIF and IPTC tags for renaming and data stamping. Phatch also supports a console version to batch photos on webservers.
