Making Of

I started off by looking at a single YouTube video, and trying to draw basic forms to try and get a feel for the motion. Here's how it started:

space---------------->

Following this, I started drawing figures over top of my wire frames. Keep in mind I was doing it frame by frame, not copying and editing. Somewhere along the way I got lost with it and ended up mixing up the legs:

INVISIBLE TEXT!!!!!!!!!!

I also wasn't happy with the lack of up-down movement, and the humongous arms, so I aimed to rectify that.

TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that I actually still had the colors from the previous version in separate layers at this point, so then I simply fixed up the colors to match the new lines:

SPACECATS IN SPACE!!

After this, there was just a few wonky frames that I fixed up.

Comments

This was a really big learning experience. As a computer science student who's interested in video games, I've been thinking about trying to create a 2-D game for quite a while, and this game would need animation to make it look good. This is a big reason why I wanted to take on this project. I was surprised to find how much you can get away with in terms of a difference in features without really being able to notice it when the animation is running. The first time through, the faces looked almost completely different in each frame, yet it didn't look too bad when in motion. Having done this once now, I think there is a lot of ways that I could speed up the process, and make things look more natural, but I'm happy with how it turned out, and with a little time and effort, I think I could make good enough animations to flesh out the game ideas in my head.
