Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics

University of Alfenas - Brazil

Research Interests

I am a Professor of Physics at University of Alfenas (Universidade Federal de Alfenas, Brazil) and my research is in theoretical condensed-matter physics, focusing mainly on:

  • electronic structure calculations (using first-principles methods)
  • the development of the density-functional theory (DFT) for ab initio calculations.

In summary, my areas of interest include:

  • many-electron systems in strong magnetic fields
  • magnetic properties of matter
  • strongly correlated systems
  • physics of nanowires, nanotubes, nanoribbons and surfaces.

Currently,

  • in collaboration with Prof. Giovanni Vignale (University of Missouri - Columbia, USA) and Prof. Klaus Capelle (Instituto de Física de São Carlos, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil) I am studying the exchange and correlation energies of a three-dimensional electron gas in the presence of magnetic fields;
  • in collaboration with Prof. R. H. Miwa (Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brazil), I am performing an ab initio study of small carbon clusters in SiC nanowires.

During my Ph.D. studies (Instituto de Física de São Carlos, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil, 2006-2009), my work focused on the study of the orbital magnetism in many-electron systems and on the search for new approaches to the construction of current-density functionals.

During my M.S. studies (Universidade Federal de Uberlândia, Brazil, 2004-2006) I carried out an ab initio total energy investigation of the Ge adsorption process on SiC surfaces.
